Despite the fact that Pliny the Elder just won an unprecedented 5th Best Beer Award in the recent Zymurgy poll; it failed to impress our tasters, finishing a fairly close second in our recent blind tasting at the Liquid Poets Study group.
Who won? You’ll never guess! Despite stacking the deck with as many highly regarded brews from previous Best Beers in America; two newcomers led the field. NoLi IPA Brewed in Spokane, WA finished in the third spot; the top spot was taken by He’Brew Hop Manna IPA, brewed by Schmaltz Brewing in San Francisco, CA.
The winner is no stranger to awards, having won a Gold Medal at the 2012 World Beer Championships. The malt bill is unusual for this style, including Wheat, Munich, Vienna, CaraMunich 40, as well as 2 row Pale malt. Kettle hops are; Warrior, Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, Crystal, and Centennial. The Dry Hops feature: Centennial, Cascade and Citra.
The IBU’s total 65 and abv 6.8%.
