    Brewing Instructions; Single Hop Project

    In order to make this most Informational, we need to follow a few basic guidelines:

    We need to use the same recipe; it is for a Pale Ale —90 min Boil
    (it will be attached, along with an extract version)
    Hops will be added at 90mins, NO FIRST WORT HOPS, 30 minutes , and at Flameout
    Dry Hop for one week prior to kegging or bottling.

    All need to use the same yeast, Available under 3 different names:
    White Lab WPL 001; Wyeast 1056; or SafeAle 5

    Our tentative date for the Tasting is September 7; most likely at Matt Smith’s
    We will probably have other tastings later

    If you can’t make it to the tasting, we will pickup your beer
    Let us know so we can schedule pickup

    Please submit your recipe, and your hop calculations;
    we’d like you to use the Tinseth method to calculate,.
    If you need help in calculating, just let me know
    ( I plan to attach a file that I recently calculated for a member)
    Recipe should include: Brew DATE, , OG , FG
    Malts, hops, Date of dryhopping, date of bottling or kegging

    Hello Folks;

    another Good question:
    How to calc Hops at Flameout or 0 mns?

    Programs won’t help so here’s what we will do:
    For all hops with alpha of 8 and above : add 1 oz
    For all hops of 8 or below: add 2 oz.

    That’s it

    Enjoy!

    I actually think the hop aroma and flavor imparted by dry-hopping will vary independently of the alpha acid content. I don’t think we really need to vary the dry-hop dosages. That said, I don’t really have that strong of feelings either way.

    I completely agree. I see no reason to adjust dry hop additions based on alpha acid content.

    Important Update:
    Single Hop Project:
    So we are all on the same PAGE here’s how the Hops should work:
    The Only value to change is the 90 min hops!they should be 10 IBU (Tinseth method)
    The remaining hops should be: 30 min 1.5 oz
    1 mins 2.0 oz
    dry 2.0 oz about 1 week
    These will be the same for all varieties.

    Please ask questions if you don’t understand.

    Best Wishes, “Doc”

    What was everyone’s general IBUs? Based on my hop and the ounces in the recipe…mine comes to a little more than 80! Way out of style. So I’m thinking of adjusting to mid 50s. What did everyone else do?
